President Trump in a meeting on Thursday claimed that the US will transform into a “Ninth World” nation if the country implements the Green New Deal.
Trump shot the goal to battle climate change as “so insane” during a call with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, contending that its precarious expense would demolish free private enterprise in the United States.
“It’s going to cost more money,” he said. “Our nation will be a Ninth World nation, not a Third World nation — a Ninth World nation!”
The president said that his Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, has agreed to move forward with the nonbinding resolution, which lays out a slew of environmental goals the US should reach over the next decade to address climate change.
Biden, during Tuesday night’s debate, said he didn’t support the Green New Deal, though his environmental plan on his website calls it a “crucial framework” for fighting climate change.
Trump said the deal was “conceived of by not smart people,” in reference to New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, who introduced the proposal last year.
He claimed it would cost $100 trillion, citing one right-leaning think tank’s estimate.
“That’s more money than this country could make in 100 years if things went well,” Trump said. “I mean they literally wanna take buildings down and rebuild them with tiny little windows, little windows so you can’t see the light, you can’t see out.”
One of the key elements of the Green New Deal is a call to use weatherization in order to make homes more energy-efficient.
The deal doesn’t have an official price tag, though Ocasio-Cortez has acknowledged it would be pricey, but has claimed it would pay for itself through economic growth.
