At the 64th Grammy Awards, singers Doja Cat and SZA won one of the final awards by taking home the best pop duo / group performance for their hit song “Kiss Me More”. When it came time for the duo to take the stage, Doja Cat provoked quite a few reactions as she was nowhere to be seen.
The R&B singer had rushed to the bathroom just before the award was supposed to be handed out; therefore, she almost missed the chance to accept it.
But luckily, she ran up the stage at the last minute.
SZA, who had taken the stage on crutches due to a torn ligament, joked hilariously about Doja’s rush to the bathroom, saying, “Brother, you went to the bathroom for five minutes, are you serious?” When Doja arrived, artist Planet Her shared the situation with the audience, saying, “Listen, I’ve never peed this fast in my entire life.”
The 26-Year-Old then pretended to fix her dress to avoid a potential wardrobe malfunction, which elicited audience laughs.
When the singer took a breath, she thanked the crowd, saying, “I really appreciate it. Thanks to everyone, my family and my team. I wouldn’t be here without you and I wouldn’t be here without my fans.” She turned to address SZA and added, “You are everything to me. You are fantastic; you are the epitome of talent. You are a lyricist; you are everything.”
Taking over the mic, SZA also thanked Doja, her mother, God and all the fans who have supported her over the years.
“I’m glad you got back in time! She told Doja, who went to hug. The duo earned a standing ovation from fellow singer Olivia Rodrigo and extended cheers from the star-studded stadium. Overwhelmed by her emotions, Doja finally had tears in her eyes when she admitted that this Grammy win was a big deal to her and that she has often downplayed her successes in the past.
The moment’s gravity instantly caused Doja to burst into tears.
Her emotion was felt throughout the room, with the camera narrowing in on a teary-eyed Lady Gaga.
Waving her tear-stained face, Doja concluded her speech: “Damn, [with a smile]. Thank you all. Be safe. Take care of yourself. “The duo’s hit song beat out artists like Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga’s I Get A Kick Out Of You and Coldplay’s Higher Power. Other nominees included hit K-pop group BTS Butter, Justin Bieber and Benny Blanco for their song Lonely.
