What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Athlete’s foot is basically a fungal infection of the foot’s epidermis. It is also called Tinea Pedis. It is caused due to several fungi, but mostly by dermatophytes. Usually, the infection spreads on the skin’s surface and in between the toes, but at times, it also appears in the form of a moccasin pattern on the sides and the bottom of the foot. This malady is more common in males than females.

After acne, athlete’s foot is considered to be the most prevalent skin disease in the United States. It has been found that this infection spreads easily in fitness centers, locker rooms, and communal showers. Despite the prefix “Athlete” in its name, this infection can affect anyone. In a recent estimation, it has been discovered that around seventy percent of the population will be infected by this malady at some point their life.

Athlete’s foot can cause burning, scaling, itching, and dry sepsis on the feet. Trichophyton is the name of the particular fungus belonging to the dermatophytes that cause Athlete’s Foot. This fungus commonly infects the upper layer of the skin when it is moist, irritated, and warm. Various degrees of burning and itching are the regular symptoms of this malady.

The other symptoms are

-Flaking and scaling of skin

-Cracked skin and the appearance of blisters

-Inflammation and swelling

At times, the infection also spreads to the knees, armpits, groin, and elbows. The main causes of this disease are wearing damp or sweaty socks and wearing poorly ventilated shoes that attract this viral infection to your feet. Thus, it is basically the superposition of sweat at a certain area on foot that leads to itching and a painful fungal mark.

The regular treatment of Athlete’s foot is performed by a general practitioner, podiatrist, or pharmacist. The basic treatment includes keeping the skin clean and dry so the fungus is not allowed to thrive. The second aspect of the medicinal treatment includes the use of anti-fungal washes and creams on a regular basis. At times, a 2-3 week course of oral anti-fungal pills like fluconazole, itraconazole, and terbinafine can also help in treating Athlete’s Foot.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has been used for quite a long time in Australia to heal people from skin diseases and is the most effective and common remedy for Athlete’s Foot. Prepare a solution of water and vinegar by taking one part vinegar and 1/4 part water and soak your feet in that mixture for around 30 minutes. At the soles of your feet, apply lotion and cream in order to make it friction-free. This can help in preventing any itching and drying of the skin on your feet, which will help in preventing Athlete’s Foot. Try washing your feet using a soapy solution at least twice a day and try keeping your feet clean. Also, you can choose to wear sandals to reduce problems caused due to uncomfortable shoes or lack of ventilation.

Selection of Shoes

Shoe selection plays a very important role as well since shoes should not only be comfortable but should also have good air ventilation that will make the foot free from moisture content. Also, sprinkle foot powder every day, in case you find more moisture and tackiness in your feet. If possible, choose natural fiber-made shoes, as they offer more flexibility to the shoe and your feet.
